DStv Confirms Live AFCON Coverage Via Supersports Channels

January 10, (THEWILL) – MultiChoice Group has announced that its SuperSport channels will broadcast all 52 games of the forthcoming 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) football tournament hosted by Côte d’Ivoire. This latest development comes after MultiChoice initially stated that it failed to acquire the exclusive broadcasting rights for AFCON 2023.

The DStv Nigeria Twitter account shared the news on Wednesday, that SuperSport was going to air the matches. According to the tweet, fans can “Watch all 52 matches of the #afcon2023 on @supersports”. An attached image clarified that “All 52 AFCON games” will be available live.

Earlier, MultiChoice lost out on the AFCON broadcasting rights to New World TV, a Togolese media group that won exclusive rights to transmit Confederation of African Football’s (CAF) tournaments for the next two years. This led to uncertainty around how African football fans without access to New World would be able to watch live matches.

However, MultiChoice has now confirmed that through a sublicensing agreement, the SuperSport channels on its DStv and GOtv digital satellite platforms will show all AFCON matches. The tournament starts this Saturday, with hosts, Côte d’Ivoire, facing Guinea-Bissau at 9pm local time.

Other broadcasters like StarTimes and the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) have also reportedly struck deals to air AFCON 2023. Still, MultiChoice securing rights for SuperSport will come as positive news to its many subscribers across sub-Saharan Africa ahead of AFCON kicking off this weekend.
