December 03, (THEWILL) – The draw for the 2023 FA Cup third round, was announced on sunday, pairing English Premier League and Championship sides.
The standout match sees a Tyne-Wear derby between Sunderland and Newcastle, the first meeting between the fierce rivals since 2016. Other intriguing ties include an all-EPL clash between Arsenal and Liverpool at the Emirates, while Manchester United travel to former FA Cup winners Wigan Athletic.
Reigning FA Cup holders, Manchester City begin their title defence at home against struggling Championship side Huddersfield Town. City, who completed a domestic treble last season, will be strong favourites to progress.
The round will also see Ramsgate or AFC Wimbledon host Championship high-flyers Ipswich Town. If seventh-tier Ramsgate can get past League Two’s Wimbledon in Monday night’s replay, they would face the tough task of taking on an Ipswich side sitting second in the second tier.
All Third Round matches take place over the weekend of January 6-7, 2024. With clubs from the top two tiers entering the draw, the competition starts to take shape, as teams bid to reach the Fourth Round and edge closer to Wembley.
