Djokovic Set To Compete At Wimbledon Despite Injury Concerns

June 28, (THEWILL) – Novak Djokovic, the seven-time Wimbledon champion, has been confirmed as a participant in this year’s tournament despite recent injury worries.

The 37-year-old Serbian tennis star was named in the Wimbledon draw on Friday, allaying fears about his fitness following his withdrawal from the French Open.

Djokovic’s participation had been in doubt after he was forced to pull out of his French Open quarterfinal against Casper Ruud due to a torn medial meniscus in his right knee. The record Grand Slam winner had previously stated that he would only play at Wimbledon if he felt fit enough to “fight for the title”, emphasising his commitment to competing at the highest level.

In a recent interview with the BBC, Djokovic made his intentions clear: “I didn’t come here to play a few rounds. If I know I can play close to my maximum or at maximum, then I’ll play. If not, then I’ll give somebody else a chance to play.”

Djokovic’s inclusion in the Wimbledon draw suggests that his recovery has progressed well. The Serbian player has reached the Wimbledon final for the past five years, including a thrilling five-set loss to Carlos Alcaraz in 2023. His consistent performance at the All England Club makes him a strong contender for the title once again.

Looking ahead, Djokovic’s schedule remains ambitious. Following Wimbledon, he plans to compete in the Paris Olympics, which begin on July 26. The Olympic gold medal remains an elusive accolade in Djokovic’s otherwise illustrious career, adding extra motivation to his participation in the upcoming Games.
