July 03, (THEWILL) – Turkey have booked their place in the Euro 2024 quarter-finals after defeating Austria 2-1 in a tense round of 16 clash in Leipzig. Centre-back Merih Demiral emerged as the unlikely hero, netting both goals for Turkey from set-pieces.
The match got off to a blistering start when Demiral poked home from an Arda Guler corner in just the second minute. Despite Austria’s best efforts to equalise, including a close-range header that flashed across the goal line, Turkey doubled their advantage in the 59th minute. Demiral again rose highest from a corner to power home a header, putting his side firmly in control.
Austria refused to go down without a fight, pulling a goal back through substitute Michael Gregoritsch in the 66th minute. The striker tucked away a flick-on from yet another corner to set up a grandstand finish. However, Turkey held firm in the closing stages, with goalkeeper Mert Gunok making a crucial save to deny Marko Arnautovic.

The result sets up an intriguing quarter-final match between Turkey and the Netherlands, who earlier defeated Romania 3-0. Turkey will be hoping to continue their impressive run in the tournament.
For Austria, the defeat marked the end of a promising campaign that saw them top their group ahead of heavyweights France and the Netherlands. Manager Ralf Rangnick will rue his side’s inability to break down a resolute Turkish defence, despite dominating possession for long periods.
