October 11, (THEWILL) – Nigeria’s Super Eagles emerged victorious against Libya with a 1-0 win in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. The game, at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, saw Nigeria claim three crucial points on matchday three of the campaign.
Nigeria’s head coach, Austin Eguavoen, made tactical adjustments for this encounter, shifting from a 3-4-3 formation to a 4-3-3 setup. This change resulted in several alterations to the starting lineup, with Frank Onyedika earning his first start in the qualifiers, while Alex Iwobi and Moses Simon were brought into the fold.
Throughout the match, both teams created opportunities, with Libya’s Ahmed Ekrawa attempting an ambitious long-range effort early on. The Super Eagles responded with multiple chances, testing Libya’s goalkeeper Murad Al Wuheeshi on several occasions. Notable attempts came from Iwobi, the in-form Ademola Lookman, and Victor Boniface, but Al Wuheeshi’s impressive performance kept the scoreline level for much of the game.
The deadlock was finally broken in the 86th minute when substitute Fisayo Dele-Bashiru found the back of the net with a sublime finish, courtesy of an assist from Moses Simon. This late goal proved decisive, giving Nigeria the win they had been pushing for throughout the match.
This victory strengthens Nigeria’s position in their qualifying group for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. The Super Eagles will look to build on this result in the reverse fixture as they aim to book their place in the continental tournament.
