March 27, (THEWILL) – Juan Martin del Potro, the former US Open champion, has given hope to his fans by hinting at a sensational return to the tournament.
Speaking in an interview with South American sports reporter Danny Miche, Del Potro said, “I still have time, I will start training, see how my leg and knee react and if I can do it or not.”
The Argentine has been away from the sport since February 2022 due to persistent wrist and knee injuries, but he has not lost his passion for tennis. He won the US Open back in 2009 and has reached three other Grand Slam semi-finals. The tournament holds a special place in his heart, and he is willing to give it a chance.
“This is the most special tournament for me. I still have time. I will start training, see how my leg and knee react, and if I can do it or not”, Del Potro said. The 34-year-old has not given up on his dream of becoming world number one, which was denied him by the long-term excellence of tennis’ three kings: Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic.
Del Potro’s return to Flushing Meadows would be a delight for his teeming fans. He is one of the most popular players on the tour, having won 22 ATP singles titles and tasted Davis Cup success with Argentina in 2016. He also won a silver medal at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games and a bronze medal at London 2012.
