May 17, (THEWILL) – Former Portugal midfielder Deco is reportedly set to become Barcelona’s new Sporting Director at Camp Nou.

The position became vacant after the current chief, Jordi Cruyff, confirmed his departure at the end of the season, as THEWILL reported. Agent Deco has a good relationship with President Joan Laporta, having previously played for the club and made over 150 appearances in four seasons, winning La Liga twice and the UEFA Champions League.

In addition, Deco’s role in Raphinha’s transfer from Leeds United last summer, which led to the signing of the Brazilian winger for £55m, impressed the Barca board. Deco’s arrival will also please manager Xavi Hernandez and Paris Saint-Germain’s Lionel Messi, who is rumoured to be returning to his old club.

Deco is known to be close to Messi, and Barca are reportedly confident of announcing his signing soon. President Laporta has claimed that Barca and Messi have “recovered” their relationship and the club is keen to bring the World Cup winner back to Catalonia. Deco’s appointment is seen as another sign of the club’s preparation for Messi’s return.
