July 23, (THEWILL) – Australian tennis star, Alex De Minaur, has confirmed his readiness to compete in the Paris 2024 Olympics after recovering from a hip injury.

The world number 6 was forced to withdraw from his Wimbledon quarter-final against Novak Djokovic earlier this month due to a cartilage tear in his hip.

De Minaur’s participation in the Games had been in doubt, but he announced on social media that he is now fit to play. “To finally be able to represent Australia in the Olympics is a dream come true,” De Minaur stated, expressing his excitement to wear the green and gold for his country.

The 25-year-old will lead the Australian tennis team in Paris, which includes players such as Alexei Popyrin, Ellen Perez, and Matthew Ebden. The Olympic tennis event will take place on the clay courts of Roland Garros from July 27 to August 4.

De Minaur’s form on clay has improved significantly this year, with the Australian reaching the French Open quarterfinals in June. He believes this experience will stand him in good stead for the Olympics, noting that the best-of-three set format could work in his favour.

The Sydney-born player’s participation in Paris marks a significant milestone, having missed the Tokyo Games in 2021 due to COVID-19. De Minaur’s recovery and return to fitness provide a boost to Australia’s medal hopes in the tennis competition at the 2024 Olympics.
