July 24, (THEWILL) – A non-governmental organisation, Centre for Cohesion and Development (CCD), has applauded President Bola Tinubu’s efforts in fighting cybercrime in Nigeria.

Director of the Centre, Dr. Uche Igwe, observed the pain and losses that many Nigerians are going through as a result of cybercrime.

In a press statement obtained by THEWILL, Igwe said, “We must commend our President for the political will he has shown in fighting the borderless menace of cybercrime. It is an issue of both personal security and national security that requires urgent attention.

“We are delighted that the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, is working hard to coordinate all the efforts of security agencies towards achieving a common purpose of a safe and secure cyberspace in Nigeria.

“Approximately every twenty seconds, one person, institution or business experiences cyber attacks in Nigeria. This could range from simple identity theft through compromise of social media, to hacking through malicious malware attacks on businesses. No one can be said to be immune anymore. Recently, a serving governor’s phone was attacked and his unsuspecting friends and associates paid billions to criminals.

“That is why we are working hard and collaborating with concerned agencies to raise awareness and collectively forge a way forward.”

According to the press statement, the Centre, in collaboration with the Nigeria Police Force and National Cybercrime Centre, has scheduled 6th and 7th August for a two-day dialogue on cybersecurity in Abuja

The dialogue will convene stakeholders in the cybersecurity sector to discuss ways forward for an effective and inclusive pathway for protecting citizens and businesses from cyber-attacks.

The dialogue is expected to be chaired by the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), with other key cabinet Ministers in attendance.

A keynote speech will be presented by the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, followed by well-curated panel discussions.

Banks, private sector operators, technology incubation firms, innovators, civil society leaders and youth groups across the country will also be in attendance.

The group has reportedly finalised plans to take the dialogue to the six geopolitical zones in the country.
