September 09, (THEWILL) – Costa Rica secured a 3-1 victory against Saudi Arabia in a friendly match held at St James’ Park, Newcastle, on Friday.

The game marked the return of Costa Rican captain, Keylor Navas, the former Real Madrid goalkeeper, who had not represented his national side since last year’s World Cup tournament. In the match, the Central American team took an early lead in the 12th minute when defender, Francisco Calvo, converted a cross from Joel Campbell. Manfred Ugalde then doubled Costa Rica’s advantage just after the half hour mark, heading home a pass from Jimmy Marin.

Saudi Arabia, now led by former Italy manager, Roberto Mancini, pulled a goal back in the 68th minute through defender, Ali Al Boleahi, who scored with a header from Feras Al Brikan’s corner. However, they were unable to find an equaliser and Costa Rica sealed the 3-1 victory late on when Randall Leal netted in the 89th minute.

Both teams now turn focus to upcoming friendly matches next week. Costa Rica face the United Arab Emirates in Croatia on Tuesday, while Saudi Arabia return to St James’ Park to play South Korea.
