Copa America: Martinez Brace Sees Argentina Cruise Past Peru

June 30, (THEWILL) – Argentina clinched first place in Group A of the 2024 Copa America with a 2-0 victory over Peru in Miami. Lautaro Martinez scored both goals in the second half, continuing his impressive form in the tournament. The result eliminated Peru from the competition, while Argentina advanced to the quarter-finals undefeated.

Despite the absence of the talismanic Lionel Messi due to a groin injury, Argentina dominated the match at Hard Rock Stadium. After a slow first half, Martinez broke the deadlock two minutes after the restart, chipping the ball over Peru’s goalkeeper Pedro Gallese. He sealed the win in the 86th minute with a similar finish, taking his tournament tally to four goals.

Peru’s lacklustre performance resulted in their earliest exit from the Copa America since 1995. They managed only six shots throughout the match, failing to threaten Argentina’s defence seriously. The defeat leaves Peru without a single victory in the tournament, having scored no goals in their three group matches.

Argentina’s victory was not without its challenges. Leandro Paredes missed a penalty in the 69th minute, hitting the inside of the post. Additionally, Nicolas Tagliafico’s goal was disallowed due to an offside call. However, these setbacks did not prevent Argentina from maintaining their perfect record in the group stage.

The result sets up Argentina for a quarter-final clash against the runner-up of Group B. Canada secured second place in Group A following a goalless draw with Chile. Argentina’s manager Lionel Scaloni, serving a touchline ban for this match, will be pleased with his team’s performance and Martinez’s goalscoring form as they aim to defend their Copa America title.
