July 29, (THEWILL) – Como, the newly promoted Serie A club, has signed former France defender, Raphael Varane, on a two-year contract with an option for a third season. The 31-year-old joins the Italian side after being released by Manchester United at the end of the 2023/2024 campaign.
Varane brings a wealth of experience to Como, having won the World Cup with France in 2018. He retired from international duty in 2023, after earning 93 caps for his country. At club level, Varane enjoyed tremendous success during his decade at Real Madrid, where he lifted three La Liga titles and four UEFA Champions League trophies.
The centre-back’s arrival marks another high-profile addition for ambitious Como as they prepare for their first Serie A season in 21 years. The club, now managed by former Spain international, Cesc Fabregas, have been busy in the transfer market this summer following their promotion from Serie B.
Other notable signings include Italy striker, Andrea Belotti, Spanish defender and goalkeeper Alberto Moreno and Pepe Reina. Como’s rapid rise through the divisions comes after their acquisition by tobacco company Djarum in 2019, following a period of financial turmoil for the lakeside club.
Como will begin their Serie A campaign with a challenging away fixture against Juventus on August 19. The match will provide an early test for Fabregas’ new-look squad as they aim to establish themselves in the top flight after two decades away.
