July 16, (THEWILL) – The Colombian Football Federation (FCF) has apologised after its President, Ramon Jeserun, and his son were arrested following an altercation at the Copa America final in Miami.
The incident occurred when private security prevented them from accessing the awards ceremony after Argentina’s victory over Colombia at Hard Rock Stadium.
According to Miami police reports, both men were charged with battery after fighting guards in a stadium tunnel. The FCF claimed the pair were simply trying to reach the pitch for the post-match presentation when tensions escalated due to tightened security measures.
In a statement, the FCF apologised to tournament organisers and those affected, while explaining that Jeserun acted on “paternal instinct” to protect his family. The Federation acknowledged that the situation should not have occurred and expressed regret for the events that unfolded.
The final itself was marred by chaos, starting over an hour late after police initiated a lockdown that left hundreds of fans stranded outside the venue. Dozens of supporters were arrested and more than 50 were ejected from the stadium as ticketless individuals attempted to gain entry.
Argentina ultimately defeated Colombia 1-0 in the delayed match to claim the Copa América title. The FCF incident capped off a tumultuous end to the tournament, overshadowing the on-field action and raising questions about event security protocols ahead of the US co-hosting of the next World Cup.
