July 03, (THEWILL) – Colombia claimed the top spot in Group D of the 2024 Copa América with a 1-1 draw against Brazil at Levi’s Stadium, Santa Clara. The result extends Colombia’s impressive unbeaten run to 26 matches and sets up a quarter-final clash with Panama.
The match began with Colombia on the front foot, as James Rodriguez’s set-piece struck the crossbar early on. Brazil broke the deadlock when Raphinha curled a free-kick past Camilo Vargas in the 12th minute. Colombia thought they had equalised through Davinson Sanchez, only for VAR to rule the goal offside.
Colombia’s equaliser came in first-half stoppage time. Jhon Cordoba’s precise pass found Daniel Munoz, who fired home his third international goal to level the score. The second half saw both teams create chances, with Raphinha coming close for Brazil and Colombia’s Rafael Borre missing a golden opportunity late on.
This result confirms Colombia’s position atop Group D and extends their unbeaten streak under manager Nestor Lorenzo. They will now face Panama in the quarter-finals, while Brazil finish second and must contend with a formidable Uruguay side in the next round.
Brazil’s task is further complicated by the suspension of key player Vinicius Junior for the upcoming match. Yet, as the tournament progresses into the quarterfinals, both teams remain strong contenders for the Copa América title.
