September 17, (THEWILL) – Christian Coleman again equalled the world-leading time of 9.83sec to edge world champion, Noah Lyles, in the men’s 100m at the Diamond League finals in Eugene, Oregon, late on Saturday.
The American sprinter clocked the same time he ran two weeks ago in China to beat his compatriot in a thrilling race. Coleman is one of just three men to have posted 9.83sec this year, along with Britain’s Zharnel Hughes and Lyles. The latter was unable to make good on his desire to break away from that group and finish his outstanding season with the outright fastest time of 2022.
Lyles, who won 100m and 200m gold at the World Championships in Budapest, crossed the line second in 9.85sec. He was joined by Ferdinand Omanyala of Kenya, who was third at the same time. The race got off to a dramatic start with Ackeem Blake of Jamaica disqualified for a false start.
Coleman made a solid if unspectacular start, but powered through impressively in the middle stages. That gave him enough to hold off the late challenge from Lyles and Omanyala in a fiercely competitive race.
In beating the world champion, Coleman gained a measure of redemption after missing out on the medals in Budapest last month. It caps a fine end to the season for the American, who equalled the world lead first set by Hughes earlier this summer.
