March 06, (THEWILL) – FIFA is reportedly reconsidering a deal to have Saudi Arabia’s tourism body, Visit Saudi, as a sponsor for the upcoming Women’s World Cup after facing backlash from the tournament’s co-hosts, Australia and New Zealand.
While no official announcement has been made, both countries expressed their displeasure over the potential partnership with “Visit Saudi”, along with prominent players like US veteran, Alex Morgan.
New Zealand Football’s CEO, Andrew Pragnell, has voiced his frustration with FIFA’s response, stating that it was ambiguous and did not confirm or deny the reported sponsorship. He also expressed disappointment with the lack of clarity, adding that their letter had caused FIFA to rethink the issue.
In addition, Football Australia’s CEO, James Johnson, shared Pragnell’s sentiments, saying that the proposed partnership did not align with their vision for the tournament. Both co-hosts have made it clear that they do not support the Visit Saudi sponsorship, and are waiting for further information from FIFA.
While FIFA has stressed the importance of treating all member associations equally and engaging with them, it remains unclear if the Saudi tourism body will be added as a sponsor for the Women’s World Cup.
