December 30, (THEWILL) – Chelsea’s Ben Chilwell has disclosed that his knee surgery went well and that he is looking forward to the long road back to full health.
THEWILL recalls that Chilwell tore his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) against Juventus in late November and initially looked to avoid surgery, with club doctors preferring to allow him time to heal naturally before making a final choice.
The left-back made some progress over the last month, but it was ultimately determined that he would require surgery. Chilwell’s season is almost certainly over now, and he faces a race to return in time for the start of the 2022/2023 season.
He took to Twitter to share the news of his operation: “Just wanted to let everyone know that the operation yesterday was successful. I feel very positive & motivated to work like a beast to get back on the pitch with my boys soon and help this great club win more trophies.
“Thank you all for the support and nice messages.”
Based on the expected lengthy spell on the sidelines, Chelsea are seeking a replacement for Chilwell. Marcos Alonso is the only senior left-back on the books right now.
The club’s bid to recall Emerson Palmieri has been thwarted by Lyon, who have refused to give up their option to buy him at the conclusion of the season.
As a result, the Blues are set to enter the transfer market, with Lucas Digne of Everton being their primary target. The Blues are willing to sign Digne on a permanent basis, but they do not want to spend too much money on him, so if an arrangement with Everton can be struck, they would like to sign him on loan.
