August 09, (THEWILL) – Luton Town made a statement signing on Wednesday, by acquiring former Everton and Chelsea midfielder, Ross Barkley, on a free transfer.
The 29-year-old England international will look to help the Hatters in their first ever English Premier League campaign, after earning promotion from the Championship last season. Barkley brings a wealth of top-flight experience to Luton, having made over 200 English Premier League appearances during his time at Everton and Chelsea. Although he spent last season at French club, Nice, the attacking midfielder is keen for a return to English football. “I’m looking forward to being back in the Premier League,” Barkley said.
Luton manager, Rob Edwards, emphasised the impact Barkley can have on his squad. “Ross brings that x-factor. He has the ability to create something out of nothing and that’s what we need in the Premier League,” Edwards stated. The club’s supporters will be hoping Barkley’s creativity can help Luton avoid relegation this season.
Barkley has been assigned the number 6 shirt and could make his debut for the Hatters away to Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday. The former England international will be eager to hit the ground running and put his talents to work in Luton’s historic top flight debut campaign.
