June 10, (THEWILL) – The Catholic Laity Council of Nigeria has tasked President Muhammadu Buhari to arrest and bring to justice, the killers of over 50 parishioners of St Francis Catholic Church, Owo, last Sunday.
Describing the attack as “uncalled for and unacceptable”, the National President of the Catholic Laity Council, Sir Henry Yunkwap, in a statement, noted that the offences of those killed were simply that they were Christians, and they were in church worshipping God.
Noting that this came on the heels of the pain of “the recent murder of our daughter and friend, Deborah Samuel, by some heartless religious extremists in Sokoto State”, the Laity Council contends further that “as a Christian group and direct mourners of this sad incident, we do not want to only condemn this barbaric act, but use this medium to let the government know that we have taken enough of these killings, and we now find it difficult to take and tolerate more.
“For any Government that provides security for the people, the Council notes further, it is indirectly telling the people to defend themselves by whatever means they can, we are tired of words. We want action and the urgent arrest and prosecution of the perpetrators of the evil act.”
The Laity also reiterated that “our leaders must rise against just condemning this act using tired and over-flogged expressions as ‘bringing the perpetrators to book.”
