August 15, (THEWILL) – In a thrilling semi-final match on Tuesday, Spain defeated Sweden 2-1 to advance to the Women’s World Cup final for the first time ever.
A late goal by captain Olga Carmona propelled Spain past the Swedes, setting up a championship clash with either Australia or England on Sunday. The game at Eden Park seemed destined for extra time until Spain sprang to life in the final minutes. Substitute Salma Paralluelo put Spain ahead in the 81st minute, only for Sweden’s Rebecka Blomqvist to equalise three minutes later. But Carmona had the final say, firing a superb shot from the edge of the box that flew into the top corner in the 90th minute.
It caps a remarkable run for a Spanish team that had never previously made it past the quarter-finals. After off-field turmoil led 15 players to withdraw from selection last year, Spain has gelled at the right time under coach Jorge Vilda.
Sweden again fell just short on the big stage after semi-final defeats at the last two World Cups. Despite standout performances from veterans like Nathalie Bjorn, they could not contain Spain’s late surge.
With their first-ever finals appearance secured, Spain must now prepare to face an Australian or English side eager to end their own title droughts. But buoyed by the brilliance of Carmona and Paralluelo, Spain will fancy their chances of lifting the trophy.
