February 13, (THEWILL) – Canada’s women’s national soccer team has cancelled its proposed strike, following legal threats from Canada Soccer.
The team had planned to strike last week to demand pay equality and improved funding for their sport, but reversed their decision on Sunday due to the potential consequences.
Captain Christine Sinclair announced the walkout on Friday, but the team confirmed they would not be striking any longer as they “cannot afford the risks” that could ensue.

In a joint statement, the players explained that Canada Soccer considered their job action to be an “unlawful strike,” but respected their rights to organise. The players also announced that they would reluctantly return to training on Sunday, but still believe the national team programme is “unacceptable.”
The statement also revealed that Canada Soccer threatened legal action and millions of dollars in damages if the players did not return to work and commit to playing in the upcoming SheBelieves Cup tournament against the United States.
