Cameroon Brush Aside Burundi To Qualify For AFCON

September 13, (THEWILL) – Cameroon secured their place in the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations with a convincing 3-0 victory over Burundi at the Roumde Adjia Stadium on Tuesday evening.

Goals from Bryan Mbuemo, Christopher Wooh and Vincent Aboubakar gave the hosts a comfortable win to top Group C. The opening half-hour saw Burundi create several chances, with Caleb Bimenyimana and Saidi Ntibazonkiza drawing smart saves from Cameroon goalkeeper Andre Onana, who put in a proper shift.

However, the Indomitable Lions began to impose themselves later in the first half, with Aboubakar and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting threatening the Burundi defence. Onana was called upon again before halftime to deny Abed Bigirimana and Ntibazonkiza and keep the score 0-0 at the interval.

Within a minute of the restart, Mbuemo pounced on a poor back-pass to slot home and put Cameroon ahead. Just after the hour mark, Wooh capitalised on a defensive mix-up at a corner to double Cameroon’s advantage with a low finish. Burundi made a triple substitution but struggled to mount any sort of comeback as Cameroon’s defence held firm.

Aboubakar wrapped up the scoring deep into injury time after more sloppy defending allowed him a simple finish to make it 3-0 at the final whistle. The result sees Cameroon top Group C and seal their place at the 2024 tournament in Ivory Coast. It is also good news for Namibia, who claimed the group’s second qualifying spot courtesy of Cameroon’s win.
