October 03, (THEWILL) – Burnley secured their first win of the season on Tuesday night, edging past Luton Town 2-1 in an entertaining match at Kenilworth Road.
The hosts took the lead in the first half through a composed Lyle Foster finish, before Luton battled back to equalise late on through Elijah Adebayo. However, a stunning strike from Jacob in the 88th minute sealed maximum points for Vincent Kompany’s side.
Luton started brightly and caused problems for the Burnley defence in the opening exchanges. Chiedozie Ogbene and Carlton Morris went close to giving the visitors an early lead. But Burnley grew into the game, dominating possession through the midfield trio of Josh Brownhill, Sander Berge and Josh Cullen. The hosts deservedly went ahead on 34 minutes when Foster latched onto a Berge pass before slotting home.
Buoyed by the goal, Burnley started the second half strongly. Brownhill went close to doubling their advantage with a powerful long-range effort. But Luton remained a threat on the break and levelled with six minutes remaining through Adebayo’s header. The drama was fast from over though, as substitute Bruun Larsen rifled a superb left-footed shot into the top corner to snatch a late winner.
It was a thrilling encounter between two energetic and attack-minded sides. Burnley just shaded it and their quality in midfield was ultimately the difference. Still, Luton can take plenty of positives from their spirited performance.
