Buhari Visits Attacked Kuje Correctional Centre

July 06, (THEWILL) – President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday, visited the Kuje correctional facility.

THEWILL reports that suspected Boko Haram terrorists numbering over 200, had on Tuesday night, blew up the Custodial Centre with dynamites, setting free about 67 detained members of the sect along with other inmates.

At least five persons, including a civil defence personnel attached to the facility, were reported killed in the attack.

Buhari was reportedly on his way out of the FCT to a conference in Senegal, but detoured for an impromptu visit to the correctional centre.

However, the President on Wednesday, visited the prison facility to assess the level of damage.

He was surrounded by a host of security operatives, including the DSS, the Military and the Police during the brief tour.

President Buhari, who was escorted around the facility for an assessment of damaged infrastructure, inspected vehicles that were destroyed.

He has, however, not made any comments on the situation following his visit.

Earlier, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo visited the facility.

Osinbajo, who arrived the prison facility in a chopper at about 3:35pm was received by the Inspector General of Police, IGP Usman Baba Alkali, paramilitary service chiefs among other top government officials.

About 879 inmates had escaped from the facility, but 443 inmates were reportedly recaptured.

Spokesman of the Service, Chief Superintendent Abubakar Umar, in an updated statement, added that suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police, Abba Kyari, and other high profile inmates are still in custody, contrary to reports that he had escaped.
