July 17, (THEWILL) – Benue State University Teaching Hospital, Makurdi, is targeting a total sum of N5 billion to improve services at the institution.
The Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Dr Stephen Hwande, who disclosed the development on Wednesday, in Makurdi, said the hospital, in no distant future, would set up an ultra-modern cancer unit.
Doctor Hwande was briefing the press to herald the International Health Investment Summit/Scientific Exhibition and Endowment Fund for Cancer, billed for Thursday, July 18, and to end on Friday, July 19, 2024.
The CMD disclosed that the aim was to enable early detection and treatment of the ailment, stressing that cancer cannot be treated only when it would be detected late, emphasising that if cancer was detected early it would be cured.
“Women that have multiple sex partners and give birth to up to four children, do experience Vagina discharge issues and it sometimes leads to cervical cancer.
“The management of this hospital wants to change the narrative of cancer management in Benue”, he said.
According to him, BSUTH would soon establish a Very Important Persons (VIP) Clinic and all the testing gadgets would be there to mimic what was happening abroad.
“The hospital would also recognise some of her benefactors, particularly the former governor of the state Sen. Gabriel Suswam for the provision of solar panels and other state-of-the-art equipment to the hospital and caused the then president Goodluck Jonathan to commission it in 2012.”
The summit with the theme, “Towards Attending One Stop Hospital”, has Benue State governor, Revd Fr Hyacinth Alia as the Chief host and Dr Tolulope Adewole as the Keynote Speaker.
Others to grace the event are the Chairman of Unicure Pharmaceutical Company Limited, Mr Eric Hanqin Liu; Dr Paul Orhii, former Director General of NAFDAC and the Consultant Radiation and Clinical Oncologist, Dr Samuel Otene, among others.
