July 18, (THEWILL) – Members of the House of Representatives have pledged 50 percent of their monthly salaries for six months to address current hunger in the country.
This follows an amendment motion moved by the House Deputy Speaker, Benjamin Kalu, at plenary session on Thursday.
Kalu had proposed an amendment to a motion appealing to young Nigerians to halt a planned protest against the hardship in the country. He urged members to contribute 50 percent of their N600,000 monthly pay to address hunger in the country.
“This government is doing its best but one year is not enough to address the challenges of this country. I want to plead with our colleagues to sacrifice 50 percent for a period of six months. Our salary is N600,000 a month. I want to plead that we let go of 50 percent of our salary for a period of six months”, Kalu said.
Majority of the House supported the motion when it was put to voice vote by House Speaker, Tajudeen Abbas, who presided over the plenary session.
The Speaker commended members for their resolve to sacrifice part of their salaries to address hunger in the land just as some members asked the Executive to also make sacrifices in line with what the Lawmakers have done.
