June 06, (THEWILL) – The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, has presented to President Bola Tinubu, a template, detailing the financial impact of implementing an affordable, sustainable, and realistic national minimum wage
President Tinubu, on Tuesday, directed Edun, to come up, within two days, the template, detailing cost implications of implementing a new minimum wage, following the rejection of the N60,000 earlier offered by the Federal Government.
Organised labour comprising by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC), had embarked on a nationwide strike on Monday, to demand an increased minimum wage for workers and the reversal of the recently increased electricity tariffs.
However, the labour union leadership suspended the strike on Tuesday, for a week after signing a commitment with the federal government to resume negotiations and establish a new minimum wage within a week.
THEWILL reports that the Minister presented a new template of the Minimum wage to President Tinubu on Thursday, at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
The template, according to the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, will form the basis of negotiation, which the Federal Government team will use when meeting with leaders of organised labour during negotiations on the minimum wage.
“We were all there to look at all issues and the president has directed the minister of finance to do the numbers and get back to him between today and tomorrow so that we can have figures ready for negotiation with labour”, Idris said on Monday.
President Bola Tinubu had assured members of organised labour on Monday that he is committed to ensure a minimum wage higher than N60,000 earlier proposed.
