BREAKING: DisCos Hike Electricity Tariff For Band A Customers

July 03, (THEWILL) – Electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) in Nigeria, have further increased electricity tariffs for Band A customers who receive 20–24 hours of daily power supply.

The development was confirmed on Wednesday, in separate statements issued by the Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company and Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC).

THEWILL recalls that the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), on April 3, 2024, approved a tariff hike for electricity customers, increasing rates by 245 percent from N68 per kWh to N225.

In May 2024, amidst customer outcry, DisCos announced a slight reduction in tariffs, a decision later confirmed by NERC.

But confirming the latest increment on Wednesday, Kaduna Disco and IBEDC, said the tariff has been adjusted from N206.80/kWh to N209.50/kWh effective immediately.

According to a statement signed by the acting Managing Director, IBEDC, Engr Francis Agoha, the review has been duly approved by the NERC as captured in the multi-year tariff supplementary order.

The statement added that the adjustment is necessitated by several key economic indices including fluctuations in the exchange rate, the current inflation rate, available generation capacity and the cost of gas.

“These factors have significantly impacted operational costs and the new tariff will mitigate these financial pressures while continuing to deliver high-quality electricity services.

“It is important to note that this adjustment affects only our Band A customers. The tariffs for Bands B, C, D, and E remain unchanged.

“We remain committed to providing reliable and efficient electricity services to all our customers across different bands.

“We understand that any change in tariffs can be a concern for our customers and we assure you that this adjustment is necessary to maintain and improve the quality of our services. Our goal is to ensure that you receive the best possible value for your money”,  Agoha said.

On its part, a statement by Kaduna Disco issued by its head of corporate communications, Abdulazeez Abdullahi, read: “The Management of Kaduna Electric informs the public of an upward review in the tariff of Band A feeders from N206.80/kWh to N209.5/kWh.

“The review is effective from 1st July 2024 and affects both prepaid and postpaid customers. Kaduna Electric assures customers on its Band A feeders of the continued availability of 20-24hrs supply daily as stipulated in the Service Based Tariff regime.

“The public should please note that the tariff for Bands B, C, D, and E remains unchanged.”
