Borno Govt Unifies Teachings Of Islamic, Shangaya Edu After Four Decades

February 20, (THEWILL) – The Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Zulum, on Tuesday, promised to unify teachings and preaching, lamenting that Islamiyya schools have been operating for more than three decades without any standard of procedures in the state.

Zulum stated this while responding shortly after a presentation of Curriculum by the Board of Arabic & Sangaya Education with title: “Unifying the Minimum Standard Curriculum for Borno State Islamic Schools”, which was held in Maiduguri.

He noted that the steps to harmonise teaching and preaching by Islamic scholars would forestall another Boko Haram insurgency crisis in the state.

He explained that his administration has supported thousands of Islamiyya education with more one billion naira within periods of two years ago.

“Our Islamiyya schools are operating without a unifying curriculum for the last three to four decades and that is a matter of great concern to us. We are very much aware of what has been happening in Borno State, the so called Boko Haram insurgency was started as a result of improper teaching.

“Furthermore, we are also witnesing another development Borno state in recent days, preaching by some scholars within the state so also it is a matter of great concern to all of us.

“Therefore, the government of Borno State will do everything possible to be sure that teaching or preaching by scholars is strictly complying with content of our Holy Book (Quran and Hadith)”, Zulum said.

He reiterated his willingness to curtail any doctrine or teaching that brings radicalisation in the state.

“Insha Allah we shall take this matter during the state Executive council meeting to review the content and then policy statement will be release to effective actualisation to all Islamiyya schools in Borno State.”Zulum warned.

Earlier, the Chairman of the Board, Islamic and Shangaya Education, Khalifa Shiek Ali Abdulfati, told the gathering that the Zulum-led administration prioritises quality education to every child regardless of their background and circumstances.

He sad that the curriculum which would be based on Imam Maliki school of thought, centred around five teaching of Arabic, Quran, Hadith, Fiqh, and Toaheed.

“In line with board mandates this curriculum was developed by based on Imam Maliki school of thought to harmonise the teaching of Arabic and all Islamiyya schools.

“We observed that lack of centralisation of teaching of Islamic education not only hindering sound teaching but create gaps among the teachers, students, and parents in the state.
