February 12, (THEWILL) – Bayern Munich were defeated 4-2 by Bochum for the first time in 18 years at Vonovia Ruhrstadion, despite a brace from Robert Lewandowski.
Julian Nagelsmann’s team struggled to get something from the fixture, but was unable to avoid a shock defeat against its inspired opponents.
Before halftime, Christopher Antwi-Adjei, Jurgen Locadia, Cristian Gamboa, and Gerrit Holtmann all scored for the hosts, who had not scored four goals in the Bundesliga since a 5-3 win over Wolfsburg in November 2007.
Meanwhile, the Bundesliga leaders allowed four goals for the first time since a 5-1 defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt in November 2019.
Bayern had won each of their previous eight away games against Bochum, and Lewandowski scored after only nine minutes, fumbling the ball home after Kingsley Coman had cushioned Thomas Muller’s pass into his path.
However, Antwi-Adjei beat Sven Ulreich after latching onto Holtmann’s soaring pass to take the lead for only five minutes.
After Dayot Upamecano was penalised for handball, the hosts completed the comeback from the penalty spot, with Locadia sweeping home.
Gamboa made it three with a nice one-two with Patrick Osterhage and a fantastic strike into the far corner, before Holtmann made it four with a fantastic curling attempt from 20 yards.
The hosts felt they had extended their lead after the break, but the offside flag denied Antwi-Adjei.
With a wonderful volley 16 minutes from time, Lewandowski pulled one back, but Bochum kept their composure and discipline to seal a remarkable win.
Bayern squandered the chance to go 12 points clear at the top of the Bundesliga table because second-placed Borussia Dortmund was not in action until Sunday. Bochum, who had only won one of their previous seven league games, climbed to 11th place with only their second win in 32 attempts over their opponents.
