July 20, (THEWILL) – Former Germany international, Jerome Boateng, has been let off with a warning in his assault retrial. The Munich court issued a conditional fine of €200,000, payable only if Boateng faces new convictions.
The case stems from allegations by Boateng’s ex-girlfriend that he assaulted her during a 2018 Caribbean holiday. She claimed he punched and bit her during an argument. Boateng was initially convicted in 2021 and fined €1.8 million.
However, the 35-year-old defender won a retrial after successfully challenging a previous ruling. Judge Susanne Hemmerich stated there was insufficient evidence to support claims Boateng was a “notorious woman beater”.
Boateng played for Bayern Munich for 10 years before joining Lyon in 2021. The 2014 World Cup winner recently signed a two-year contract with Austrian club LASK.
The court’s decision marks the end of a lengthy legal process for Boateng, who has maintained his innocence throughout the proceedings.
