August 14, (THEWILL) – Aston Villa defender Tyrone Mings is set to undergo knee surgery after sustaining a serious injury during his side’s English and Premier League opener against Newcastle United.

The England international was stretchered off in the first half of Saturday’s match at St. James’ Park. He collided with Newcastle striker Alexander Isak, causing significant damage to his knee. Villa confirmed on Monday that scans have revealed the 30-year-old centre-back will require an operation. This will be followed by a lengthy rehabilitation period.

The injury comes as a major setback for manager Unai Emery. It adds to Villa’s woes after attacker Emiliano Buendia was recently ruled out for up to eight months with a knee ligament issue. Mings has been ever-present for Villa since their promotion to the English Premier League in 2019, missing just 12 league games over the past three seasons.

NCDMB Solar Trainning Advert 6pm -

Newcastle posted a message on Twitter wishing the defender a speedy recovery following the news of his impending surgery.
