July 02, (THEWILL) – The bill seeking to repeal the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) Act 2007 has passed a second reading at the Senate.
Titled, ‘National Identity Management Commission (Repeal and Enactment) Bill 2024 (SB. 472)’, the bill proposed by Deputy Senate President, Barau I. Jibrin, provides for the establishment of a National Identity Database.
Read for the first time on June 5, the bill seeks to enhance the efficiency and inclusivity of the Identity Management System through comprehensive provisions designed to improve and update the extant provisions in line with global best practices.
It is directed to empower NIMC with responsibilities for the maintenance of the national database, registration of individuals, and the issuance of identity credentials.
Jibrin, in a lead debate on June 5, said the proposed legislation was crucial for the socio-economic and political development of the country, as well as to national security and an effective identity management system.
The legislation aims to streamline the sharing of personal data, incorporating robust data protection measures to safeguard the privacy and confidentiality of individuals’ data, and fostering trust among citizens in the handling of their information among others.
