October 02, (THEWILL) – Gymnastics superstar, Simone Biles, made history once again on Sunday, becoming the first woman to land the incredibly difficult Yurchenko double pike vault in international competition. The move will now be named the “Biles II” in the gymnastics rulebook.
Biles pulled off the remarkable feat during qualifying at the 2023 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Antwerp, Belgium. She is competing with the USA women’s team, who finished first in the qualifying round and will aim for the team gold medal on Wednesday.
The 26-year-old now has five gymnastics moves named after her, across vault, floor exercise and balance beam. This latest accomplishment comes after Biles took a break from the sport following a bout of “the twisties” at the Tokyo Olympics in 2022.
She returned triumphantly to competition in August, winning a record eighth US national title. Biles revealed that her perspective on success has changed, saying “Now, it’s just showing up, being in a good head place, having fun out there, and whatever happens, happens.”
After struggling with mental health issues in Tokyo, the legendary gymnast’s return to form has been inspiring. With 19 world titles and four Olympic golds to her name already, Biles continues to push the boundaries of her sport.
