April 14, (THEWILL) – Besiktas have announced the departure of their manager, Fernando Santos. The announcement comes on the heels of a disappointing run of results for the 16-time Turkish champions.
Santos, who was appointed as Besiktas’ manager in January of this year, has left the club in fourth place in the Super Lig standings, a staggering 36 points behind league leaders, Galatasaray. The club has been winless in their last five matches, a stark contrast to the success Santos had experienced in his previous role as the manager of the Portuguese national team.
The former Portugal coach, who led his country to victory at the 2016 European Championship, had taken over the Polish national team in January 2023. However, his tenure with the Polish side was short-lived, as they parted ways with him eight months later when their defeat in Albania left them struggling to qualify for the 2024 European Championship.
Besiktas’ decision to part ways with Santos comes as no surprise, given the club’s recent run of poor results. The Turkish giants will now be tasked with finding a replacement who can help the team regain their form ahead of mounting a challenge for the league title in the succeeding season.
