September 17, (THEWILL) – Benue State Director of Sports, Dr Phillip Nongu, has challenged organisers of Sporting competitions to be guided in their decisions and actions to encourage young people to develop careers in sports.
Dr Nongu, the Chairman of the Lobi Stars football club of Makurdi, pointed out that most great people in sports discovered their talent from grassroots and age-grade competitions.
Nongu was one of the dignitaries, who decorated winners with medals during the medal presentation ceremonies at the eighth National Youth Games Festival, which was held in Asaba, the Delta State capital.
At the ceremony, Dr Nongu presented Gold, Silver and Bronze medals to respective winners in different categories of the Wushu Kungfu event and congratulated them for their achievements.
He charged coaches to endeavour to keep track of athletes who excel in the games and should be able to nurture them to stardom, noting that with consistency and fairness, the nation can produce world-class athletes.
THEWILL gathered that Benue athletes also excelled in some events in which the Commissioner for Sports, Youths and Creativity, Rt. Hon. Terkimbi Ikyange, commended them for justifying government sponsorship of the tournament.
