September 20, (THEWILL) – A 94th minute goal from Jude Bellingham snatched a dramatic late 1-0 victory for Real Madrid over Union Berlin in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday night.
In front of a packed Santiago Bernabeu, the hosts struggled to break down a resilient Union side for large periods. The first half brought little in terms of clear-cut chances, with Union content to sit deep and frustrate their more illustrious opponents.
The second half followed a similar pattern, with Madrid dominating possession but unable to find a breakthrough. As the game entered stoppage time it looked as though Union would claim a hard-fought point, only for Bellingham to react quickest and prod home after Federico Valverde’s shot was blocked.
The result preserves Madrid’s perfect start to the season, while Union will be disappointed not to take something from their impressive UCL debut.
Attention now turns to the weekend’s domestic action, with Madrid travelling to city rivals Atletico Madrid, for La Liga’s first Madrid Derby of the 2023/2024 campaign, and Union hosting Hoffenheim.
