April 22, (THEWILL) – German football giants, Bayern Munich, suffered yet another defeat in their latest match against Mainz, with a final score of 3-1 at the Mewa Arena.
The reigning champions had hoped to bounce back after their UEFA Champions League exit against Manchester City but instead, extended their winless streak to four games. The loss opens the chance for Borussia Dortmund to climb to the top of the table later in the day.
Sadio Mane gave Bayern a well-deserved lead in the first half, but Mainz managed to come back and equalise, thanks to Ludovic Ajorque. Leandro Barreiro then put the hosts ahead, and Aaron Martin scored a fantastic goal to secure the victory for Mainz.
Bayern had threatened early on with Mane’s goal disallowed for offside, but the visitors failed to maintain their lead. Thomas Tuchel’s charges will now be hoping to put an end to their winless run when they host Hertha Berlin at home next Sunday. Mainz, meanwhile, will be travelling to play Wolfsburg, one of their rivals for a spot in Europe, on the same day.
Tuchel was brought in to take the place of Julian Nagelsmann because of Bayern’s poor domestic form but the return of the ex-Borussia Dortmund manager to the Bundesliga has not helped the serial winners improve. The successive games before the end of the 2022/2023 campaign will be interesting to follow.
