July 12, (THEWILL) – The Bayelsa State Governor’s Cup, also known as the “Prosperity Cup”, has been a driving force in grassroots football talent development for nine years.

Ono Kevin Akpe, the Director General of the tournament, recently shared insights into the competition’s growth and impact.

Since its inception in 2015, the tournament has expanded from 110 teams to over 200, including the addition of female and para-soccer editions in recent years. The competition has become a breeding ground for young talents, with several players now pursuing professional careers in Nigeria, Africa, Europe, and beyond.

Governor Douye Diri’s administration has shown unwavering support for the tournament. Diri, a former Commissioner for Sports, has emphasised the importance of channelling youth energy into meaningful sporting careers. This commitment has led to enhanced coaching and scouting programmes, attracting the attention of international football scouts.

The tournament has implemented several initiatives to improve its quality and reach. These include referee training courses, international scouting programmes, and collaborations with foreign academies. Notable successes include a third-place finish at the African Youth Cup in Cape Verde and numerous players securing contracts with professional clubs.

Looking ahead, Akpe envisions the Prosperity Cup becoming a globally recognised brand. He hopes to attract corporate sponsors to further develop the tournament and create more opportunities for Bayelsa’s youth. Governor Diri’s promise to develop 10 community fields is expected to enhance the quality of play and increase the chances of local talent reaching national team levels.
