August 12, (THEWILL) – Barcelona have confirmed the departure of captain Sergi Roberto after 14 seasons with the club. The 32-year-old midfielder’s contract expired at the end of June 2024, with no decision on his future made until now.
Roberto, a product of Barcelona’s La Masia Academy, made his first team debut in 2010. He played 373 games for the Catalan side, scoring 19 goals and winning 25 trophies, including two UEFA Champions Leagues and seven La Liga titles.
The Spain international is best remembered for scoring the winning goal in Barcelona’s remarkable 6-1 victory over Paris Saint-Germain in the 2017 UCL last 16, overturning a 4-0 first leg deficit.
In recent years, Roberto has shown his versatility by playing primarily as a right-back, while also filling in other positions when needed. His adaptability and loyalty to the club have made him a valued member of the squad over the past decade.
Barcelona thanked Roberto for his service in a statement, noting his long association with the club since joining La Masia at age 14. The midfielder now leaves as a free agent, bringing to an end a successful 14-year spell in the Barcelona first team.
