February 26, (THEWILL) – The Federal High Court, Abuja, has fixed March 19, 2024, for ruling on a fresh application by Nnamdi Kanu, seeking to be admitted to bail in the terrorism charges against him.

Justice Binta Murtala-Nyako fixed the date after hearing submissions from Kanu’s lawyer, Alloy Ejimakor, praying for bail for his client and the Federal Government Lawyer, Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN).

THEWILL reports that Kanu’s fresh trial resumed at the Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday.

The leader of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) had filed a fresh application for bail. Dated February 5, 2024, the IPOB leader said he may not be able to put up a good defence unless admitted to bail to have unfettered access to his lawyers. He also claimed to be suffering from acute hypertension and acute heart disease, among other ailments.

Kanu, through his lawyer, also asked the court not to allow continuation of his trial until certain conditions were met by the Federal Government.

Among others, he requested that DSS operatives be barred from interfering with his lawyers during visitation. He also asked the court to compel the Federal Government to allow him to wear the clothes of his choice.

While the Federal Government objected to the bail bid on the ground that Kanu was once granted bail but jumped and fled the country, it also contended that he has no right under any law to dictate how his trial should be conducted.

Counsel to the Federal Government, Awomolo (SAN), while seeking the dismissal of the request, said it was a gross abuse of court process that must not be allowed.

Awomolo takes over from David Kaswe, a senior lawyer from the Federal Ministry of Justice, who had been handling the case for the Federal Government.
