September 13, (THEWILL) – Austria took a big step towards qualifying for Euro 2024 after a convincing 3-1 away win against Sweden on Tuesday night.
The visitors went ahead early in the second half through Michael Gregoritsch, who rose highest to head home Stefan Posch’s pinpoint cross. Just three minutes later, Marcel Sabitzer clever through ball set up Marko Arnautovic to double Austria’s advantage.
Isak Hien conceded a penalty after tripping Philipp Mwene in the box. Arnautovic made no mistake from the spot to make it 3-0 and put the game beyond Sweden’s reach. Despite a late consolation goal from substitute Emil Holm, Austria comfortably held on to claim all three points.
The win leaves them joint-top of Group F, behind Belgium on goal difference. Sweden now face an uphill task to qualify automatically, sitting third in the group on just six points after five games. Austria are edging ever closer to booking their place at the Euros with two qualifiers remaining.
The visitors were dominant and clinical on the night, with striker Arnautovic grabbing a brace. His goals either side of Gregoritsch’s opener means Austria now have one foot in the European tournament.
