August 12, (THEWILL) – Atletico Madrid have completed the signing of Julian Alvarez from Manchester City for a fee of up to €95 million. The 24-year-old Argentine forward has signed a five-year contract with the Spanish club, marking a record sale for Manchester City.

Alvarez joined City from River Plate in 2022 for £14m and enjoyed a successful stint in England. He won two English Premier League titles, the FA Cup, and the UEFA Champions League during his time with the club. The versatile striker made 54 appearances last season, scoring 19 goals and providing 13 assists.

The Argentina international has also enjoyed success on the international stage, playing a key role in his country’s 2022 World Cup victory in Qatar and winning two Copa America titles. Recently, he participated in the Copa America and the Olympic Games with Argentina’s Under-23 team.

Alvarez’s arrival at Atletico Madrid comes after the departures of Alvaro Morata to Milan and Memphis Depay at the end of his contract. He joins fellow summer signings Robin Le Normand from Real Sociedad and Alexander Sorloth from Villarreal as Atletico strengthen their squad for the upcoming season.

The transfer represents a significant profit for Manchester City and reinforces Atletico Madrid’s attacking options. Alvarez’s versatility and goal-scoring ability make him an exciting addition to Diego Simeone’s team as they look to compete for domestic and European honours in the 2024/2025 season.
