June 06, (THEWILL) – In a bid to save the ruling All Progressives Congress [APC] from implosion, State Governors elected on the party’s platform met late Monday night with members of the National Working Committee where they shortlisted five aspirants for President Muhammadu Buhari to nominate his preferred aspirant from.
The top five aspirants are Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Rotimi Amaechi, Bola Tinubu, Kayode Fayemi and Dave Umahi. There was a further proposal to narrow the list to three aspirants with Umahi and Fayemi as casualties.
After the meeting with the NWC without its embattled Chairman Abdullahi Adamu, the governors called him for a meeting where they held further talks on the presidential primary election. Thereafter they proceeded to the presidential villa to meet President Buhari with the names of the shortlisted aspirants to give him the honour of choosing his preferred candidate from their shortlisted aspirants.
THEWILL recalls that the president had met with the Governors earlier where he directed them to work with the NWC following their insistence that the presidential candidate must emerge from the South.
It was not clear as at press time the President’s next move.
Though Buhari had earlier canvassed for the election of the flagbearer using consensus model however yesterday in a sudden twist, he declared that delegates should be allowed to freely determine the party’s candidate.
