February 06, (THEWILL) – With a dominant victory in the women’s moguls at the Beijing Games, Jakara Anthony has broken Australia’s 12-year gold-medal drought at the Winter Olympics.
In the six-woman super final, Anthony, 23, scored 83.09 points. Second place went to American Jaelin Kauf (80.28), and third place went to Russian Olympic Committee member Anastasiia Smirnova (77.72). Anthony dominated the two-day event, taking first place in each of the four rounds.
After Tess Coady’s bronze in the women’s snowboard slopestyle earlier on Sunday, it was the first time in Winter Olympics history that Australia has won more than one medal on the same day.
Until Anthony, Australia’s most recent Winter Olympic champions at the 2010 Vancouver Games were Torah Bright (snowboard halfpipe) and Lydia Lassila (women’s aerials).
