Ana Bella Foundation Condemns Getafe Over Greenwood Transfer

September 03, (THEWILL) – Spanish domestic abuse charity, Ana Bella Foundation, has called on La Liga club Getafe to reverse their decision to sign Manchester United forward, Mason Greenwood, on loan.

THEWILL recalls that Greenwood was accused of attempted rape, controlling behaviour and assault of a young woman in January 2022. The criminal charges were later dropped in February 2023 due to insufficient evidence.

However, the Ana Bella Foundation believes Getafe have set a “terrible example” by signing Greenwood on transfer deadline day. The charity, which helps women, who have suffered domestic abuse and gender violence, said: “Getafe executives should never have hired Mason Greenwood and should immediately overturn their decision.”

“If you’re a public-facing organisation like Getafe there is no excuse to take a neutral stance on violence against women – you must take moral responsibility.”

The statement highlights the complex debate around sporting organisations’ responsibility regarding violence against women. While Greenwood was not convicted, the allegations remain highly concerning to many. Getafe is now left to weigh up sporting and commercial factors versus ethical considerations.
