August 26, (THEWILL) – The United States women’s 4×100 metres relay team clinched the gold medal on Saturday, at the World Athletics Championships in dominant fashion.
Anchored by 100m world champion, Sha’Carrie Richardson, the US team crossed the finish line in a championship record time of 41.03 seconds. They got off to a strong start with Aleia Hobbs, Melissa Jefferson, and Jenna Prandini running the first three legs. They handed the baton cleanly and gave Richardson a significant lead going into the final leg.
Although Jamaica closed the gap slightly, there was no catching the American team. Jamaica took silver in 41.21 seconds. Great Britain managed to hold on for the bronze medal with a time of 41.97 seconds in a tight contest for third. The US women have now won back-to-back 4x100m world titles, re-establishing their dominance in the event after being upset in 2019.
Saturday’s time was the fastest by the American women since the 2012 London Olympics. Earlier in the day, the US men’s 4x100m relay team was also victorious, led by 200m champion, Noah Lyles, on the anchor leg. However, it was not all celebrations for the US squads, as the women’s 4x400m team was disqualified in the semi-finals due to an illegal baton exchange.
Nonetheless, Saturday brought more gold for the American women. With Richardson and Thomas providing a powerful closing burst, the US reigned supreme in the marquee 4x100m relay. Their time of 41.03s will be tough to top anytime soon.
