Algerian Winger Benrahma Completes Permanent Move To Lyon

July 01, (THEWILL) – Algerian international Said Benrahma has finalised a permanent move from West Ham United to Olympique Lyonnais. The 28-year-old winger, who spent the latter half of the 2023/2024 season on loan at Lyon, has now made his switch to the French club permanent for an undisclosed fee.

Lyon initially acquired Benrahma’s services in January 2024 with a reported £5 million loan fee. The French side is believed to have triggered the permanent transfer clause with a £12.3 million offer, cementing Benrahma’s future in Ligue 1. During his loan spell, the Algerian demonstrated his value to the team, netting three goals in 12 league appearances.

Benrahma’s journey with West Ham began in 2020 when he joined from Brentford. Over his tenure with the Hammers, he made a significant impact, scoring 24 goals in 155 appearances across all competitions. His contributions played a crucial role in West Ham’s historic triumph in the 2023 Europa Conference League, where he converted a penalty in the final against Fiorentina, helping to earn the club their first major trophy since 1980.

West Ham United released a statement acknowledging Benrahma’s contributions to the club: “Everyone at West Ham United would like to thank Said for his contribution and wish him the best for the future.” This marks the end of a chapter for Benrahma in English football, as he embarks on a new challenge in France’s top flight.

The transfer represents a strategic move for both clubs. For Lyon, it bolsters their attacking options with a proven English Premier League performer. For West Ham, it allows them to recoup a substantial fee for a player, who had fallen out of favor in recent months, potentially freeing up resources for future signings as they look to build on their recent European forays.
