Algeria Let Lead Slip In AFCON Draw Against Angola

January 16, (THEWILL) – Algeria got their 2024 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign off to a shaky start on Monday, as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Angola. The Desert Foxes took an early lead through Baghdad Bounedjah but conceded in the second half as Mabululu converted a penalty.

The match was meant to signify Algeria’s determination to make amends for their shock early exit as holders in 2022. When Bounedjah clinically finished a ball over the top in the 18th minute, it seemed the 2019 champions were on their way. However, the Algerians failed to take full advantage of their dominance, with a spectacular Bounedjah overhead kick ruled out for offside.

As the game wore on, Angola grew in confidence and eventually found an equaliser. Mabululu, who plays his club football in South Africa, won and converted a penalty in the 65th minute after Nabil Bentaleb fouled him in the box. His initial spot kick hit the bar but he bundled home the rebound.

Try as they might in the closing stages, Algeria could not break down Angola again despite battering them with late set pieces. Captain Riyad Mahrez was a constant threat from dead ball situations but the minnows held on for a famous point.

After four straight goalless draws coming into AFCON 2024, this represents a good result for Angola. But for Algeria, who suffered a humiliating group stage exit in 2022, this draw only raises further questions about their ability to lift the continental trophy again.
