February 13, (THEWILL) – Carlos Alcaraz has declared that tennis legend, Roger Federer, is the “Lionel Messi of tennis”, according to a recent interview.
Alcaraz spoke highly of Federer’s exceptional talent and the ease with which he played the game, saying: “Roger, because of the talent he has and the ease with which he plays, he’s the Lionel Messi of tennis.” Alcaraz also added that Federer’s influence on tennis endures even in his retirement, “It’s clear at times watching him, that the Swiss’s influence on tennis still endures.”
While Federer is one of Alcaraz’s role models, the youngster also pays close attention to two of the current “Big 3” in tennis, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal. Alcaraz said: “I want to continue winning many Grand Slams and for that I have to pay attention to Djokovic and Rafa, because the years go by and they continue to win those tournaments and continue to give their best level. And that is what I would like to be: keep myself at the best level as the years go by.”
In his tribute to the legends of tennis, Alcaraz also remembered the late Argentinean Juan Martin Del Potro, saying: “Juan MartÃn is one of the great tennis players that tennis has had and I would have liked very much to play against him.” Alcaraz expressed his regret for not having had the chance to play against Del Potro, who he called one of the great tennis players of all time.
Alcaraz will begin his Argentinian Open campaign by facing either Laslo Djere or Fabio Fognini, after having withdrawn from the Australian Open due to injury.
